Use of Aluminium Decking in Listed Building Conversion, Fabrick Square, Birmingham

Leading midlands construction company Colmore Tang called upon ABL aluminium decking during the refurbishment and conversion of the old Harrison Drape factory into residential apartments in heart of Birmingham city centre.

The reason for the selecting ABL’s Designer decking was a combination of value engineering and decking surface finish. In keeping with the Industrial theme, the decking would provide a modern and safe surface on the walkway areas between apartments and in the raised garden seating area.

Having selected ABL Architectural Aluminium to supply and deliver the decking the contractor completed the installation without any problems.

The client was very satisfied with the decking which is hard wearing and will not rust. It therefore achieved the finish, durability and good value that the client was seeking.

Both the contractor and their client would be happy to ask ABL Architectural Aluminium to supply decking for future projects.

Aluminium Within Architecture – What Are the Benefits?

Have you ever considered what your walkway, bridge, deck, or steps are constructed from? The most common answer is, of course, aluminium and it will most likely be an aluminium extrusion section or profile. In fact, due to its versatility, aluminium is a staple material within architectural applications.

The growth of aluminium walkway systems in lots of different applications (i.e. food processing plants, petrochemical plants, theatrical studios, hospitals, shopping centres, sports arenas and power generation plant) is due to the benefits listed below:

  • Lightweight
  • Environmentally friendly (100% recyclable)
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Easily worked
  • Maintenance free
  • Non-toxic
  • Non-combustible
  • Corrosion-free

More and more of today’s architects and civil engineering designers are specifying that materials are lightweight, strong and corrosion resistant. This will include aluminium and exclude materials such as wood and steel. Aluminium is approximately two-thirds lighter than steel and offers longer life than wood.

Even Better Logistic Services From ABL!

Even Better Logistic Services From ABL!

ABL is pleased to announce further developments within its Architectural division, offering an enhanced service to its customer base by joining forces with WMH Group to provide a faster delivery service into the UK. WMH is an international stockholder specialising in non-standard aluminium alloys and products. As part of a three way agreement between ABL, WMH and the raw material provider, Constellium, additional supply benefits are now available to UK and Eire customers via ABL Architectural.

Rather than calling off material from Constellium on longer lead times, WMHs central warehouse facilities in Essen Germany, are located close to the Dutch border and this will shorten delivery times to the UK. As ABL Business Development Manager, Martin Eyles, explains “Having WMH in the supply chains brings two key benefits; faster delivery times and smaller order values which we know will assist our customers in the UK and Eire”. The new agreement will allow WMH to hold larger quantities of more architectural profiles. “Now that we have a central source for European stock, there will be greater visibility of available and incoming stock, a larger range of planks held in stock and shorter journeys to UK and Irish customers”, Martin added.

He concluded, “we have had to decline smaller enquiries in the past since it was not cost effective to setup a new mill production run. We now have access to the UK-branch of WMH for fast responses to our prospective customers. This means that ABL will be able to concentrate on a more efficient marketing and sales focus to promote the architectural products whilst backing this up with an enhanced supply chain offering”
